Winona Zabriskie, 88, of Mount Pleasant, passed away on 19th day of December 2012 in Provo after a full and happy life.
Winona was born 11 October 1924 in Fairview; daughter of Henry Erastus and Alta Jane Pritchett Larsen. Winona married Don LeGrand Taylor (deceased) in 1941 and had three beloved children: Don Gordon Taylor (Sharon) Alpine, Winona Kathleen Harris (Joseph) American Fork, and Carol Jean Taylor (deceased). She divorced Don and married Gail Jay Zabriskie (deceased) in 1946. Winona and Gail have two children Jay Wynn Zabriskie (Natalie) Mt. Pleasant and Cindy Lee Hall (Marvin) Mt. Pleasant. 
Service and survival are the hallmarks of Winona’s life – she lost her husband Gail in 1991 after caring for him through his illness; became a breast cancer survivor in her late 70’s. Upon receiving a clean bill of health served an LDS Mission to Chicago Illinois where she also served in Jefferson City Missouri at the National Achieves. Returning home she spent more than a decade working in the Manti Temple. A life-long maker of quilts Winona’s quilt are loved all over the world she also devoted countless joyful hours working at the Mt. Pleasant North Stake Humanitarian effort..
A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Winona has joined her family members who have gone before her; husband Gail after twenty-one years apart a joyful reunion is certain Precious daughter Carol Jean Taylor who left hours after she arrived; Grand-daughter Jenny dearest angel. Brother John Darryl Larsen and his sweet-heart Beth, sister Estella Tippitts her husbands Delbert and Heber, sister Thresa Brewer and her husband John. Brothers-in-law Morris Darwin Zabriskie (Darr), William Marlin Zabriskie (Bill), Duane Zabriskie , James Christensen, and Robert Bushell, Richard Nash; sister-in-law Lena Johnson Larsen. This family reunion will be full of joy, Yahtzee and Pinochle. Those not yet attending this heavenly family reunion are her children Gordon his wife Sharon, Kathleen her husband Joseph (Jay), Jay his wife Natalie, Cindy her husband Marvin, along with 16 Grandchildren ages 9-and up; 39.5 Great-Grandchildren, her brother Boyd Larsen and sister Alura Nash, brother in law Kay Zabriskie and his wife Erma, Sisters-in-law Carolyn Christensen Bushell and Marcella Zabriskie and many loved nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. After Winona’s initial reunion she continues her Lord’s work: bring warmth and joy to God’s children where he needs her.
Funeral services will be held Friday December 28, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in the Mt. Pleasant North Stake Center. Viewings will be at the Rasmussen Mortuary in Mt. Pleasant on Thurs. December 27 from 6-8pm and 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. prior to services at the church. Interment at Mt. Pleasant City Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made at the Humanitarian Effort in your local area – take time and tie or quilt a blanket for others in honor of Winona and continue the warm gifts of kindness she so lovingly gave. Families are like old quilts – although they tend to unravel at times they can be stitched back together with love. We’ll miss our Grandma Nona!

Lois J Poulsen, born June 21, 1917. Beloved wife, mother, grandma, grandma great and grandma great-great passed away very peacefully at 1:55 a.m. Sept. 1, 2012.
She married Hans B. Poulsen November 16, 1936 in Price, UT. Their marriage was later solemnized April 24, 1965 in the Manti Temple. Hans passed away May 1, 1985.
Lois knew nothing but hard work and tend babies her whole life. She talked a lot about helping her father in the fields every day. She loved to eat and always ate everything especially her desserts. Her sister Margaret always said “Give it to Lois, she will eat it.”
She was very proud of her four boys and they loved her very much. She was also very proud of the fact that she graduated from Wasatch Academy. She ate and fought for life to the very end. She worked at the Moroni Processing Plant and J.C. Pennys. She will be missed very much for her quick whit and her beautiful smile. She is survived by her two sons Dick (Donna) and Tony (Connie); daughter-in-law Vonda Rae Poulsen. She is preceded in death by Mother and Father Elmer and Helma Jensen, brothers and sister Russel, Margaret and Jack; sons Wayne and David; granddaughter and grandson Paige and Trent; great-great granddaughter Jordan.
The family wishes to thank Autumn Park and Intermountain Hospice for their wonderful care and their never-ending thoughtfulness. She was also tenderly cared for by her loving daughter-in-law Donna Poulsen.
Graveside services will be Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in the Mt. Pleasant City Cemetery with viewing prior at Rasmussen Mortuary from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m.

Mt. Pleasant Plumber Killed in Utah Construction Accident

David Cheston Madsen, our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend, died tragically in a construction accident August 22, 2012, in Ephraim Utah. He was born December 21, 1971 in Mt. Pleasant to David & Cheryl Madsen. He graduated from North Sanpete High, class of 1990. He married Brenda Ivory Madsen on April 24, 1992 in Ft. Green and then sealed May 12, 2001. He started his own business, Madsen Plumbing, and enjoyed life working in Construction. Cheston served as a Commander in the Search and Rescue and spent countless hours helping on searches and serving his fellow man. He helped people any chance he got. He also served as a Primary teacher, Young men’s leader, and in the Elders Quorum. Cheston is survived by his parents David & Cheryl Madsen, spouse Brenda Ivory Madsen, Daughters Brylee Rose, Aubrey Mae, Paige Noel, and Macie Mariah, Brothers Ryan(Lorie), Mt Pleasant, Danny, Roosevelt, Josh(Katie), St George, and Tim(Andrea), Moroni. He is preceded in death by grandparents, Shirley & Denice Madsen and Ed & Bessie Lund. Funeral Services will be held Monday August 27, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. in the Mount Pleasant North Stake Center (461 N 300 W). Viewings will be held Sunday August 26, 2012 from 6:00- 8:00 p.m. at Rasmussen Mortuary ( 96 N 100 W, Mt. Pleasant) and from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. prior to services at the church. Interment will be in the Mt. Pleasant City Cemetery.

Obituary: Dewey J. Fillis

Dewey J. Fillis, age 79, of Salt Lake City, died Sunday peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family.

Dewey was born June 29, 1921 in Mt. Pleasant, Utah, to James and Verda Christensen Fillis. On September 19, 1941 he married Marjorie Crocker. He grew up in Mt. Pleasant and graduated from Wasatch Academy in 1939. He excelled in track, tennis, basketball and football and joined the National Guard at the age of 16. He attended Snow Junior College and Brigham Young University on a football scholarship. He went on to receive a distinguished alumnus award from Wasatch Academy and Snow College.

He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the South Pacific for 3 1/2 years during World War II. Dewey joined the Salt Lake Police Department in July of 1947 and served in nearly every division. The last 15 years of his career were spent in administration as Captain, Assistant Chief and Chief of Police. He graduated from the FBI National Academy and was an instructor at the University of Utah, Weber State, Brigham Young University and the University of Wyoming. He was a member of the International Chiefs of Police, the Governor's Panel on the Crimes Omnibus Bill, the Travelers Aid Association, the Utah Drug Abuse Panel and was the Department Commander of the American Legion, Post 2. Dewey also served as Chairman of the Utah Peace Officers Standard and Training Council. He was awarded many certificates of commendation, among them the National Reverence for Law Award by the Fraternal Order of Eagles. While Chief, he established many programs and committees geared toward crime prevention.

Dewey loved sports and was active for many years. He was a member of the Alpine Country Club, but was unable to play the last few years because of his health. He was an avid fan of the San Francisco 49ers and the Utah Jazz.

Preceded in death by his father, mother, and brother, Leon. Survived by his wife Marjorie, daughters Marilyn Joyner (Monty), Susan Cook and son Dale (Becky), a brother Elmer (Reva), brother-in-law, Lawrence Crocker (Pat), seven grandchildren and their spouses, 10 great-grandchildren and his nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 18, 2001 at 12 noon at Evans & Early Mortuary, 574 East 100 South, where friends and family may call one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute to their favorite charity. Interment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Lynn R Poulsen passed away on July 3, 2012 in Mt. Pleasant, Utah. Lynn was born on January 20, 1921 to LeRoy and Lydia Poulsen in Rexburg, Idaho. He was the youngest of five children with two brothers, Harold and Earl, and two sisters, Estelle and Afton. He spent his early years in Mt. Pleasant, Utah and spent two years in the Utah Army National Guard, assigned to the 222nd Field Artillery Battalion, before being activated for combat duty in World War II. Lynn was stationed in Harford, England, when the German invasion of France began. In 1944 he was sent to Normandy and assigned as a forward observer to the 204th Field Artillery Battalion-part of the 20th Corps of Patton's 3rd Army. In Granville, France, Lynn was shot three times, but the hospital had so many casualties he had to be moved to a soccer field where he was placed in a six-man tent. While on the operating table, German aircraft bombed the area. The medical personnel fled and left him alone on the table. Luckily, his best friend, Bill Beck, rescued him from the bombing. For his service he received a Purple Heart American Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal and one of eleven Honorees recognized at University of Utah's Veterans Day Commemoration Celebration, November 11, 2011. He was very patriotic and proud of his military service.
Lynn married Gwen Pritchett on Oct 19, 1946 in Mt. Pleasant, Utah. Marriage later solemnized in the Manti Temple, December 30, 1959. Lynn and Gwen were the proud parents of four daughters. Lynn spent the first years of his career as manager of Safeway stores, moving to Wendover in 1956 to manage the family owned Wendover Motel. Lynn and Gwen were very involved in church and community affairs. Lynn held many callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints including high councilman, counselor in bishoprics, scout leader, Bishop of the Wendover Ward and a Sealer in the Manti Temple. He was Justice of the Peace, Tooele County, Wendover City Judge, and Utah Highway Patrol Honorary Colonel. Lynn and Gwen retired to Mt. Pleasant, Utah in October, 1987. Lynn was a charming and engaging man with an exceptional sense of humor who loved life and loved sharing his experiences through humorous stories. He had a passion for the Western history and culture.
Lynn is preceded in death by parents, wife, daughter, Kaye Poulsen Despain, and grandson, Robert David Kikumoto.
He is survived by daughters, Nanette (David) Kikumoto, Greenwood Village, CO, Wendy (Michael) Linares, Draper, UT, and Becky Poulsen Longson, Denver, CO. 14 grandchildren, David, Anthony, Mollee, Aaron, Alicia, Charles, Hilary, Jordan, Joshua, Christian, Jared, Courtland and Nicholas, and 23 great grandchildren. We will miss you Dad. God be with you 'til we meet again.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 7, 2012 at Mt. Pleasant LDS Chapel, 295 South State, Mt. Pleasant, Utah at 12:00 noon. A visitation will be held on Friday, July 6, at the chapel from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. as well as Saturday, July 7, 10:30 - 11:45 p.m. Interment, Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Services under the direction of Rasmussen Mortuary.

Bertha Hermansen

Bertha (Berti) Olievia Peterson Hermansen was born in Indianola, Utah to Lucile Seeley Peterson and Wallace Franklin Peterson. She is the 2nd oldest of 7 children. She spent her childhood romping in the fields and hills of peaceful Indianola, Utah.

Bertha married Dale K Hermansen in the Manti temple, moved to SLC, and had 5 children: Roger Dale, Wallace Joseph, Nanette Florence (Lynch), Markus K and Mitzi Lucile (Barrow). She was blessed with 17 grandchildren and 7great-grandchildren.

Bertha was known for her kindness, patience, generosity and mercy. She was exceptionally strong and remarkably determined. She had a natural talent for painting portraits, writing poetry, sewing clothes, and understanding human behavior. Her testimony held tremendous power. Most of all, however, she was a loyal, wise and genuine friend.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday June 9, in the Mt. Pleasant 5th ward (Red Church 49 South State) at 1:00 p.m. Visitation will be held preceding the services from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at the church. Interment in the Mt. Pleasant City Cemetery. Ralph Ruesch Hafen

Ralph Ruesch Hafen (age 95) joined the Celestial Choir May 29, 2012 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born September 21, 1916 in Mt. Pleasant, Utah to William and Matilda Ruesch Hafen. He was the 6th of 7 children.
In 1940 he married Iris Buchanan. They had five children: Keith (Barbara) Hafen, Carol (Michael) Broadbent, Nancy (Keith) Grimshaw, Jane (Chris) Church, Steven deceased (Diane) Hafen, 24 grandchildren and 52 great-grandchildren. Ralph served in the US Army during WWII  and worked for Safeway Stores for 36 years. He and Iris served a mission to Dallas Texas in 1976 and were called to the St. George Temple presidency in 1986. Iris passed away in January of 1991.
Ralph married Marie Mosteller in 1992, adding her five children to the family: Shauna (Gerald) Bybee, Barry (Angie) Mosteller, Erick (Karen) Mosteller, Brenda Melchoir, Tonya (Andy) Farabee and 10 grandchildren. Ralph and Marie enjoyed serving in the temple together. Music was a major part of Ralph's life and he loved sharing his beautiful tenor voice.
Funeral services will be held in Mt. Pleasant, Utah on Saturday, June 2, at the LDS Chapel, 49 South State Street, at 1:00 pm. A viewing will be held before the service at 11:30 am. Interment, Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 16th, at 1:00 pm in the LDS East Stake Center, 449 South 300 East, St. George, Utah.
